Shintoism

Japanese: Shintoism
Shintoism

...However, when Shinto was made the state religion in the Meiji era, Shinto, which was claimed to transcend religion as a state ritual, was called Daikyo, Honkyo, Kodo, Kannagaramichi, etc., and since the various sects of Shinto, which were considered to be on the same level as Buddhism and Christianity, were called Shinto, the words used to describe Japan's unique ethnic religion remained diverse, and the words Shinto and Shinto belief were often used among researchers. On the other hand, the words Shinto and Shintoism became common among those who study and introduce Japan in Western countries, so that the word Shinto came to be commonly used among Japanese people in the Showa era, and it became common to divide the diverse nature of Japan's unique faith into various types, including Koshinto, Jinja Shinto, Sect Shinto, and Folk Shinto.
[Gods and Festivals]
The ancient Japanese felt a sense of fear and reverence towards things beyond human power, and called the things that inspired such feelings kami.
