A genus of the family Treponemataceae in the order Spirochetales of the division fungi. It has no flagella, is a minute spiral shape, 6-20 μm long and 0.1 μm wide, and actively motile. There are two types, pathogenic and non-pathogenic, each of which is classified into many serotypes. Infectious organisms include icteric hemorrhagic leptospira, the causative agent of Weil's disease, as well as september fever leptospira and autumn fever leptospira. 分裂菌綱スピロヘータ目トレポネマータ科の一属名。鞭毛(べんもう)はなく,微細ならせん形で長さ6〜20μm,幅0.1μmで,活発に運動する。病原性のものと非病原性の2種があり,それぞれが多数の血清型に分類されている。ヒトに感染するものは,ワイル病病原体の黄疸(おうだん)出血性レプトスピラのほか,七日熱レプトスピラ,秋疫(あきやみ)レプトスピラなど。感染は一般に湿潤な環境下で皮膚を通じて起こる。
