A merchant guild organization established in Spain and its colonies in the New World. Since the first was established in 1494 by a merchant from Burgos with the objective of monopolizing wool trade and trade with Flanders, Spain established guilds in Bilbao (1511), Seville (1539), and Madrid (1632), and by the end of the 18th century there were 14. The first was established in Mexico City in 1594, and together with Consulado of Lima, which was established in 1613, they monopolized commerce in the New World. Later, as part of commercial reforms under the Bourbon dynasty, more guilds were established in Buenos Aires, Caracas, Havana, Cartagena, Veracruz, and Santiago (Chile) at the end of the 18th century.
