Modern Japanese popular songs. The name comes from the fact that JOAK (later NHK) broadcast what were called "popular songs" or "trendy songs" under the name "popular songs" in the early Showa period. They are deeply connected to the development of mass media such as movies, radio, records, and television, and are also greatly influenced by foreign music. The first popular song is said to be "Katyusha no Uta" (1914), which was a huge hit in the Taisho period. The composer, Nakayama Shinpei, later wrote "Sendo Kouta" (1921) and "Hambu no Minato" (1928). Koga Masao was known for his "Koga Melodies" such as "Sake wa Namida ka Tameiki ka" (Are Tears or Sighs?) (1931) and "Kage wo Mouite" (A Yearning for the Shadows) (1932), which were sung by Fujiyama Ichiro. Shoji Taro, who sang "Akagi no Komoriuta" (A Lullaby of Akagi) (1934), was also an era-breaking song. Hattori Ryoichi also incorporated a blues rhythm into Awaya Noriko's "Wakare no Blues" (1937). During the war, military songs were all the rage, such as Koseki Yuji's compositions "Bivouac Song" (1937) and "Wakawashi no Uta" (1943). Immediately after the defeat, hits began with Namiki Michiko's "Ringo no Uta" (1945), followed by Kasagi Shizuko's "Tokyo Boogie-Woogie" (1947), Omi Toshiro's "Yunomachi Elegy" (1948), and Fujiyama Ichiro's "Nagasaki no Kane" (1949). Misora Hibari, who would later be called the Queen of Popular Songs, made songs such as "Sad Whistle" (1949), "Echigo Lion's Song" (1951), and "Ringo Oiwake" (1952) popular. Television broadcasting began in 1953, and around this time a production system was introduced that linked with the record industry to promote singers, and in 1959 the Japan Record Awards were established. The rockabilly craze of 1958 was succeeded by Japanese pop music in the 1960s. Songs such as Black Petals (1959), Look Up and Arukō (1962), and Hello Baby (1963), with music composed by Nakamura Hachidai and lyrics by Naga Rokusuke, were born. In the 1960s, following folk songs such as Mike Maki's Roses Have Bloomed (1966), group sounds by bands such as The Tigers and The Blue Comets became popular. The 1970s saw the emergence of new music, represented by Arai Yumi (Matsutoya Yumi) and Nakajima Miyuki, and idol singers such as Pink Lady were enthusiastically supported by young people. However, sales of enka and other traditional pop records fell into disarray amid the karaoke boom.

現代日本の大衆歌曲。名称は，〈流行歌〉〈はやり歌〉と呼ばれていたものを昭和初期にJOAK（のちのNHK）が〈歌謡曲〉という名で放送したことによる。映画，ラジオ，レコード，テレビなどマスメディアの発達と深くかかわり，外来音楽の影響も大きい。大正期に大流行した《カチューシャの唄》（1914年）が歌謡曲の第１号とされる。作曲者の中山晋平はその後《船頭小唄》（1921年），《波浮の港》（1928年）などを手がけた。古賀政男は藤山一郎の歌った《酒は涙か溜息(ためいき)か》（1931年），《影を慕ひて》（1932年）などの〈古賀メロディー〉で親しまれた。《赤城の子守唄》（1934年）などを歌った東海林(しょうじ)太郎も時代を画した。また，服部良一は，淡谷のり子の歌った《別れのブルース》（1937年）でブルースのリズムをとり入れた。戦時下では古関裕而作曲《露営の歌》（1937年），《若鷲の歌》（1943年）など軍国歌謡一色となった。敗戦直後は，並木路子の《リンゴの唄》（1945年）に始まり，笠置シヅ子《東京ブギウギ》（1947年），近江俊郎《湯の町エレジー》（1948年），藤山一郎《長崎の鐘》（1949年）がヒット。また，後に歌謡曲の女王と呼ばれる美空ひばりが《悲しき口笛》（1949年），《越後獅子の唄》（1951年），《リンゴ追分》（1952年）などをはやらせた。1953年，テレビ放送が開始，このころからレコード産業と結びついて歌手を売り出すプロダクション・システムが導入され，1959年にはレコード大賞が制定された。1958年のロカビリー旋風は1960年代の和製ポップスにひきつがれる。中村八大作曲，永六輔作詞で《黒い花びら》（1959年），《上を向いて歩こう》（1962年），《こんにちは赤ちゃん》（1963年）などが生まれた。1960年代にはマイク真木《バラが咲いた》（1966年）などのフォーク・ソングについで，ザ・タイガース，ブルー・コメッツなどのグループ・サウンズが流行した。1970年代は，荒井由実（松任谷由実），中島みゆきに代表されるニューミュージックが登場，若年層にはピンク・レディーなどアイドル歌手が熱狂的に支持される一方，カラオケ・ブームのなかで演歌などの伝統的歌謡曲のレコードなどの売上げは不振に陥っている。
