A city in eastern Yamanashi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Most of the city is occupied by the Chichibu Mountains, and the Katsura River flows east through the southern part. The city center is one of the centers of the Gunnai region, and has long produced Kai silk. The synthetic fiber industry was also active, but it is declining. In recent years, electrical equipment and general machinery industries have flourished, accounting for 67% of the city's manufactured goods shipments (2003). It produces sweet potatoes, radishes, and rice, and livestock and sericulture are thriving. It is a junction for the Chuo Main Line and Fujikyuko Railway, and the Chuo Expressway runs through it, so the number of commuters to Tokyo is increasing. There is Saruhashi Bridge and Sasago Tunnel. Sweetfish fishing in the Katsura River is famous. 280.25 km2 . 28,120 people (2010).
