…Originally, it is a phylogenetically ancient cortical part of the brain that developed in relation to the sense of smell, roughly corresponding to the olfactory brain in a broad sense. The term limbic system is derived from the limbic lobe, which was named mainly on the basis of comparative anatomical studies, but this term is said to have originated in 1878 when P. Broca gave the name le grand lobe limbique to the central part of the brain that surrounds the interventricular foramen in a circular shape. Currently, there is no convincing definition of the limbic lobe, so the distinction between the limbic lobe and the olfactory brain is also unclear. …
