Also called an adder. A circuit in a computer that adds two binary numbers, or a unit circuit that handles one digit of a binary addition mechanism. The latter has three input terminals (A, B, C') and two output terminals (C, S). A and B each receive one digit of the operand (0 or 1), and C' receives a carry signal (0 or 1) from the lower order. That digit of the sum (0 or 1) is sent out as a signal to S, and the carry signal (0 or 1) to the higher order is sent out to C.

加算器とも。コンピューターにおいて二つの二進数を加算する回路，または二進法による加算機構の１けた分を受けもつ単位回路。後者は３個の入力端子（A，B，C′）と２個の出力端子（C，S）をもち，AとBとにはそれぞれ演算数の１けた（０か１）が入り，C′には下位からのけた上げ信号（０か１）が入る。Sには和のそのけた（０か１）が，Cには上位へのけた上げ（０か１）が信号として送り出される。
