Katayama Nanpu

Japanese painter. Born in Kumamoto City. His real name was Kumaji. He moved to Tokyo in 1909 (Meiji 42) and studied under Takahashi Koko. His first work, Around November, was exhibited at the 7th Bunten Exhibition in 1913 (Taisho 2), and was recognized by Yokoyama Taikan, winning second prize. The following year, he joined the revived Japan Art Academy, and in 1924, he became a member. After that, he was mainly active in the Inten Exhibition, but after World War II, he also exhibited at the Nitten Exhibition. In 1958 (Showa 33), he became a member of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1968, he was awarded the Order of Culture. Known for his colorful and lively expressions, his representative works include White Rain, Professor Yokoyama Taikan, and Guest in the Fresh Cool Weather (Woman on the Shoreline). He is also well known for restoring the ceiling painting of the Crying Dragon at the Yakushido Hall of Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple, which had been destroyed by fire in 1968.

日本画家。熊本市に生まれる。本名熊次。1909年（明治42）に上京、高橋広湖(こうこ)に師事する。1913年（大正2）第7回文展に初出品した『霜月頃』が横山大観に認められて二等賞になる。翌1914年日本美術院再興に加わり、1924年に同人。以後主として院展で活躍するが、第二次世界大戦後は日展にも出品した。1958年（昭和33）日本芸術院会員、1968年に文化勲章を受章。多彩で生気に富む表現で知られ、『白雨』『横山大観先生』『新涼の客（汀女(ていじょ)さん）』などが代表作。また1968年、先に焼失した日光山輪王寺薬師堂の鳴竜(なきりゅう)の天井画を復原したこともよく知られている。
