Sławomir Mrożek (English spelling)

Sławomir Mrożek (English spelling)

Polish playwright, novelist, and cartoonist. He was one of the leading figures of the contemporary Polish avant-garde. He initially studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, aspiring to be a painter, but from around the age of 20 he began publishing satirical short stories and drawing satirical cartoons, which gained him a reputation. This versatile talent really showed its worth in his playwriting, where he created a unique world known as "Mrozek's plays" and became world famous. His technique is grotesque, and his sharp satire is aimed at politics and human relationships. The "Prague Spring" (a democratization movement in the Czech Republic) of 1968 was crushed by the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet and Eastern European troops (the Czechoslovak incident). Mrozek openly criticized the Czechoslovak incident and moved to Paris in the same year. He moved to Mexico in 1989, and returned to Japan in 1996. His representative works include the short story collections "Elephant" (1957), "Wedding in Atomic Village" (1959), and "Rain" (1962), and his plays include the trilogy "On the Ocean", "Carol" and "Striptease" (all 1961), "Tango" (1964), "The Prophet" (1967), "Happy Happenings" (1973), "Exiles" (1974), "Vaclav" (1979), and "Ambassador" (1981). He also published a comic book collection titled "Poland in Paintings" (1957).
