Chinese novelist. His real name was Xu Chan, and his pen name was Luo Hua Sheng. He was born in Tainan, Taiwan, and grew up in Fujian and Canton. While studying at Yenching University, he participated in the May Fourth Movement (1919). The following year, he was one of the founders of the Literature Research Society, and published novels and prose works such as "The Bird of Life" (1921) and "The Spider that Makes a Nest" (1922) in the Monthly Novels. He then studied in the United States and the United Kingdom, and after returning to Japan, he taught at Yenching University and then at the University of Hong Kong, devoting himself to the study of Taoism and Buddhism. At that time, he was reluctant to westernize China, trying to unearth traditional Chinese culture, but after the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, he became aware of the corruption of the Nationalist government and advocated the need to absorb Western culture. He died suddenly of heart disease just as he began to play an active role as a pioneer of the anti-Japanese cultural movement in Hong Kong. His early works are known for their unique style, rich in Buddhist pessimism and tropical atmosphere, but they also have aspects that give the impression of a stubborn ego. His later novels include "The Way Home" (1931) and "Spring Peaches" (1934).
