When focusing on parts of an object, it is the force that acts in a direction that pulls those parts apart. The opposite of pressure. The tension in a string is the force that stretches the string, and when the string is straight or in contact with a smooth object and is taut, the magnitude of the tension is the same everywhere, whether the string is stationary or moving. Surface tension is the force that pulls any line on the boundary surface of a liquid vertically to both sides, and its magnitude is expressed as force per unit length. The tension of an elastic body is the force that pulls any surface within an object vertically, and its magnitude is expressed as force per unit area. Vapor pressure is also sometimes called vapor tension, or simply tension.
