[Died] June 14, 1662. London. British politician. Eldest son of H. Vane. A Puritan, he traveled to New England in 1635 and returned in 1637. In 1639 he was appointed treasurer of the navy. In 1640 he was elected to the Short and Long Parliaments, supported the impeachment of Earl Strafford, negotiated an alliance with Scotland, and after J. Pym's death he played an active role as the leader of the Parliamentarians. He was elected to the Council of State during the republic (1649), but resigned in 1653 after clashing with O. Cromwell over the treatment of the military against Parliament. He was imprisoned in 1656 for his public speeches, but returned to Parliament in 1659 and participated in the overthrow of R. Cromwell's Lord Protectorate. He was imprisoned and executed after the Restoration.

She produced bawdy comedies typical of the Restoration period, such as The Forced Marriage (1670) and The Rover (2 parts, 77, 81). Her most famous work is the novel Oroonoko (88), which became the most important precursor of the novel genre that flourished in the 18th century. A romantic story with a black slave as the protagonist, it was also an early example of the introduction of the idea of ​​the "noble savage" into literature, and had a great influence on later writers.
