Born: 26 May 1613, Essex [Died] June 14, 1662. London. British politician. Eldest son of H. Vane. A Puritan, he traveled to New England in 1635 and returned in 1637. In 1639 he was appointed treasurer of the navy. In 1640 he was elected to the Short and Long Parliaments, supported the impeachment of Earl Strafford, negotiated an alliance with Scotland, and after J. Pym's death he played an active role as the leader of the Parliamentarians. He was elected to the Council of State during the republic (1649), but resigned in 1653 after clashing with O. Cromwell over the treatment of the military against Parliament. He was imprisoned in 1656 for his public speeches, but returned to Parliament in 1659 and participated in the overthrow of R. Cromwell's Lord Protectorate. He was imprisoned and executed after the Restoration. Vane |
