Yu-wen shi (English spelling)

Japanese: 宇文氏 - うぶんし（英語表記）Yu-wen shi; Yü-wên shih

A northern ethnic group that emerged in the mid-3rd century and established the Northern Zhou Dynasty (557-581) in northern China in the late 6th century. Together with the Murong and Tuoba, they are considered to be a branch of the Xianbei people who originally migrated from Manchuria to Mongolia as nomads. However, there are also theories that they were of Xiongnu descent, and that the Yuwen themselves were descendants of the Southern Xiongnu but their subjects were of Xianbei descent. In the first half of the 4th century, they were defeated by the Murong and joined them. After the Tuoba of the Northern Wei defeated the Murong, they moved to Wuchuan (one of the six towns of the Northern Wei).

3世紀中頃勃興し，6世紀後半に中国の華北に北周王朝 (557～581) をつくった北方民族。慕容氏，拓跋氏とともに，もと満州からモンゴリアに遊牧した鮮卑族の一部族とされている。ただし，匈奴系説や宇文氏自身は南匈奴の子孫だがその被支配者が鮮卑系であるとする説もある。4世紀前半，慕容氏に敗れてそのもとに入った。北魏の拓跋氏が慕容氏を破ったあと，武川 (北魏の6鎮の一つ) に移り住んでいた。
