Danish composer and conductor. Born near Odense on the island of Funen, he was familiar with the violin from an early age. He studied composition and violin at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen from 1884 to 1886, and studied composition privately under composer NV Gase (1817-1890). He was strongly influenced by Gase and Brahms in his early years. After working as a violinist at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, he served as conductor there from 1908 to 1914. During this time, he produced works such as Symphony No. 2, The Four Temperaments (1901-1902) and Symphony No. 3, Symphony of Expansion (1910-1911), establishing his foothold as a symphonic composer. Like his contemporaneous contemporaries Sibelius, he continued to distance himself from the European trends of his time and to write original works that pushed the possibilities of tonality to their limits. In 1915, he became a professor at his alma mater, and in 1931, he became the director of the same institution. In addition to his widely known Symphony No. 4, Immortal (1914-1916) and Symphony No. 5 (1921-1922), he also composed orchestral works such as Pan and Syrinx (1917-1918), concertos for violin, flute, and clarinet (1911, 1926-1927, 1928), four string quartets (1888-1919), and numerous songs. →Symphonies

Nielsen

Danish sculptor. Born in Svendborg. After studying at the Academy in Copenhagen, he studied abroad in Paris and Italy. His works are characterized by bold and passionate motifs and sensual female figures, and his baroque style contrasts with Thorvaldsen's classical style. His representative works include "The Fountain of Jumeir" and "Venus and the Apple".
