A deciduous medium-to-tall tree of the maple family (APG classification: Sapindaceae). It is the most representative maple in Japan after Acer palmatum, and there are many horticultural varieties. Its leaves are slightly larger than Acer palmatum, and the sawtooth is generally regular and fine, single. It is found mainly in the temperate mountainous areas of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The Yamamomiji variant has leaves with 7 to 9 lobes and coarse double serrations. It is found in the mountainous areas along the Sea of ​​Japan coast from Aomori Prefecture to Fukui Prefecture. Wild Acer palmatum and Acer maxima are sometimes simply called Yamamomiji in contrast to the horticultural varieties, but this is not taxonomically correct.

カエデ科（APG分類：ムクロジ科）の落葉中高木。イロハモミジに次いで日本の代表的なカエデで、園芸品種も多い。イロハモミジに比べ葉がやや大きく、鋸歯(きょし)は一般に規則的な細かい単鋸歯。北海道、本州、四国、九州の主として温帯山地に分布する。変種ヤマモミジは葉が7～9裂し、粗い重鋸歯をもつ。青森県から福井県までの日本海側山地に分布する。イロハモミジやオオモミジの野生のものを園芸品種に対比させ単にヤマモミジということがあるが、分類学上は正しくない。
