Born July 8, 1869 in Spencer, Indiana
Died October 17, 1910, Colorado Springs. American poet and playwright. After receiving his master's degree from Harvard University in 1894, he continued to write poetry while teaching at his alma mater and other universities. He published works such as The Masque of Judgment (1900), a verse drama depicting the conflict between God and man, and A Sabine Woman (retitled The Great Divide in 2006 and 2009), a prose play in which a woman who inherited the traditions of Puritanism is paired with a man who embodies the frontier spirit. He also published a collection of letters.

Born February 5, 1837 in East Northfield, Massachusetts.
[Died] December 22, 1899, Northfield. American evangelist. Became a shoe salesman in Boston at the age of 17, during which time he converted to orthodox Protestantism (1855). He became a successful businessman in Chicago, but in 1860 he devoted himself to evangelism, opening a Sunday school and evangelizing in the slums. He built Moody Church and became president of the YMCA there. Later he opened a seminary for men and women in Northfield. In 1889 he returned to Chicago and organized a Bible institute and a Bible conference. He was known for his simple preaching of the gospels.

American politician and lawyer. After working as a lawyer in Massachusetts, he served as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1895 to 1902. He became acquainted with T. Roosevelt, and became Secretary of the Navy in 1802 and Attorney General in 1804, working hard to break up the trusts. He served as a Supreme Court justice from 1806 to 1910.

アメリカの福音伝道者。 17歳でボストンの靴販売人となり,その間プロテスタント正統派に改宗 (1855) 。シカゴで商売に成功したが,1860年より伝道に専念,日曜学校を開き,スラム伝道を行なった。ムーディ教会を建て,同地の YMCA会長に就任。のちノースフィールドに男女神学校を開設。 89年再びシカゴに出て,聖書研究所および聖書会議を組織。福音書の平明な説教により知られた。
