Mutsu Bay - Mutsuwan

A bay in central Aomori Prefecture, surrounded by the Shimokita Peninsula and the Tsugaru Peninsula. It is connected to the Tsugaru Strait by the Hiradate Strait in the northwest. The southern part of the bay is divided by the Natsudomari Peninsula into Noheji Bay on the east and Aomori Bay on the west. Ominato Bay is also located in the northeast corner. The bay has an area of ​​about 1,500 square kilometers, and a coastline of about 250 kilometers. The average depth is about 38 meters. The seabed in the center is flat, at a depth of 40 to 50 meters, and there are steep cliffs off Cape Yakeyama on the Shimokita Peninsula and on the west side of the Natsudomari Peninsula. Sardines and cod were once fished in the bay, but scallop farming has become popular since the 1960s. In addition to scallops, wakame seaweed, nori seaweed, oysters, etc. are also cultivated. It was once a route for the Seikan Ferry, but was discontinued in 1988. There is a ferry boat route connecting Noheji and Hakodate.

青森県中央部、下北半島(しもきたはんとう)と津軽半島に抱かれた湾。北西部の平舘海峡(たいらだてかいきょう)によって津軽海峡と通じている。湾の南部は夏泊半島(なつどまりはんとう)によって東側の野辺地湾(のへじわん)と西側の青森湾に分かれる。また北東隅には大湊湾(おおみなとわん)がある。湾の面積は約1500平方キロメートル、海岸線は約250キロメートルに達する。平均水深は約38メートル。中央部の海底は水深40～50メートルで平らであり、下北半島の焼山(やけやま)崎沖と夏泊半島西側は急崖(きゅうがい)をなしている。湾内ではかつてイワシやタラを漁獲したが、昭和40年代以降ホタテガイの養殖が盛んとなっている。ホタテガイのほか、ワカメ、ノリ、カキなどの養殖も行われる。青函連絡船(せいかんれんらくせん)の航路であったが1988年廃止。野辺地と函館を結ぶフェリーボートの航路がある。
