1828‐99 German psychiatrist. Born in Dresden, he studied at the universities of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad), Würzburg, Leipzig, and Berlin. After serving as a private lecturer at the University of Königsberg (1863-66), he was appointed to a private psychiatric hospital in Görlitz, where he later became its director (1867). He called attention to the state, course, and outcome of mental illness, and proposed the concepts of symptom group and type. Catatonia, hymenorrhea, hymenoid disease, and paralysis were all named by him, but catatonia in particular, along with hymenorrhea, which he had his student E. Hecker describe, was the precursor to Kraepelin's concept of dementia praecox. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
