A speech by President Lincoln delivered in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863 during the American Civil War. Gettysburg was the site of a fierce battle that prevented the Confederate Army from invading the North, and the speech was delivered at a ceremony to dedicate the National War Cemetery held there on November 19, four months after the battle. The speech begins with the sentence, "Eighty-seven years ago our fathers founded on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the belief that all men are created equal," and concludes with the words, "a government of the people, by the people, for the people," in which he preaches that we must devote ourselves to America, which has a mission to demonstrate human freedom.
