The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) was founded in 1905 under the League of Nations, and was established in Rome as the International Institute of Agriculture (IIA) for the purpose of improving the living conditions of farmers through intergovernmental cooperation. During World War II, the need to establish a new international organization to improve the food and agricultural situation in the postwar world was already being discussed.
