Both adults and larvae are carnivorous, and many are beneficial as natural enemies of wood beetles, such as the white-banded cuckoo beetle, the ant-like cuckoo beetle, Thanasimus lewisi (illustration), and the red-breasted ant-like cuckoo beetle, T. substriatus . Adult ant-like cuckoo beetles are found on the trunks of dead coniferous trees, and at first glance, their strongly constricted thorax and red and white horizontal stripes on a black background make them look like red mountain ants.
