When considering the word and concept of children, the first thing that is noticeable is the diversity of its meaning. Currently, the most common concept of children is that of adults, which refers to all stages of life from the emergence of an individual to adulthood, such as fetuses, infants, children, boys and girls. Next, as the opposite concept of parents, it refers to those produced by individuals of the previous generation, or those who play an equivalent role, regardless of age or biological or social maturity.

子どもという言葉と概念について考えようとする際に，まず注目されるのは，その意味の多様性であろう。現在最も一般的なのは，おとな(成人)の対概念としての子どもであり，この場合は，個体としての生命の発生から成人するまでのあらゆる段階にあるもの，すなわち，胎児，乳幼児，児童，少年少女などを総称する。次いで親の対概念としてのそれは，年齢や生物的･社会的成熟度とは無関係に，先行世代の個体によって生み出されたもの，もしくはそれと同等の役割をとる者の総称である。
