…At the end of the Edo period, Echigo was home to 11 domains, including Takada, Shibata, Nagaoka, Mineyama, Murakami, Muramatsu, Shiiya, Yoita, Itoigawa, Kurokawa, and Mikkaichi. In addition, the area was interwoven with tenryo (shrines), yori-chi (official domains), and hatamoto-ryo (official domains) enclaves, including Niigata. Sado, which had gold mines, was a tenryo (shrine). In 1868 (Meiji 1), the Niigata Court was established to govern the former tenryo of Echigo. It was soon renamed Echigo Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture, and the northern part of the area was governed by the newly established Kashiwazaki Prefecture, while the southern part was governed by the Sado Court.
