Date of birth and death unknown. An Indian Buddhist scholar active from the late 4th century to the early 5th century. Famous for being the master of Yoga-Yuishiki thought. His Sanskrit name was Asaga. Born to a Brahmin family in Purushapura, Gandhara (Peshawar, Pakistan), he became a monk in a sect of Hinayana Buddhism (also known as Sarvastivada or Kejisita), and later traveled to Ayodhya in central India and converted to Mahayana Buddhism. According to legend, he learned the Yoga-Yuishiki treatises from Bodhisattva Maitreya, but regardless of the historical facts, there is no doubt that he inherited this lineage of thought from the yogis who preceded him. Based on this foundation, and following traditional sectarian hermeneutics, he analyzed and organized linguistic activity rooted in the deep consciousness of humans, which is where his important role in the history of Indian Buddhism lies. His representative works are the Mahayana Sutra and the Abhidharma-College. His younger brother, Vasubandhu, inherited and developed his older brother's teachings, and is highly esteemed alongside his brother. The ideas that originated with them were also introduced to China as the Sharon and Hosso sects.
