A folk dance from Sweden. It has a unique 3/4 rhythm and appears in records from the 16th century. The name suggests a connection with Poland, but the accompanying dance (also called polska) has a very northern character, and since it is found in Finland and Norway, the prevailing theory is that it is of Scandinavian origin. A similar dance (and piece of music) is known in Scotland, the reel. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
