A brown algae belonging to the order Phaeophyceae and the family Phaeophyceae. It is found in the intertidal zone in spring. The algae are sparsely branched and shaped like a long whip. Brown lumps are attached to the surface of this alga, which are clusters of twigs that produce sexual reproductive organs. It is dioecious, with some strains producing ovipositors and others producing antheridia. The asexual form of this alga was originally called Aglaozonia and was famously treated as a separate species, but it is a thin thallus that is significantly smaller than the sexual form mentioned above. It is found in the central and southern Pacific coast of Honshu, the Seto Inland Sea, and the western and northern coasts of Kyushu.

褐藻類ムチモ目ムチモ科の海藻。春に潮間帯にみられる。藻体は疎に枝分れした長い鞭の形をしている。この藻の表面に褐色の塊のようなものが付着するが，これは有性生殖器官を生じる小枝の集りである。雌雄異体で，ある株のものには生卵器を生じ，ある株のものには造精器をつける。なお，この藻の無性世代は初め Aglaozoniaと称し，別種の藻として扱われたので有名であるが，上述の有性世代に比して著しく小型の薄い葉状体である。本州太平洋岸中南部，瀬戸内海，九州西・北岸に分布する。
