Roussillon (English spelling)
A region in the south of France. Former province name. Also spelled Luchon. It corresponds to most of the Pyrenees-Orientales department. Its capital is Perpignan. It was conquered by Rome in the 2nd century BC, by the Visigoths in 462, and briefly ruled by Muslims in 720. In the 750s it became part of the Carolingian Frankish Kingdom, and in the Middle Ages it was part of the County of Barcelona and then the Kingdom of Majorca, and France and Spain often fought over its ownership. It finally became French territory in 1659 with the Treaty of the Pyrenees. Grapes and vegetables are cultivated, and it is a wine-producing region.
