Abbreviation: APO. An international intergovernmental organization established in April 1961 by the Agreement on the Asian Productivity Organization. It was proposed at the first Asian Productivity Roundtable held in Tokyo in 1959. Its purpose is to promote economic development by improving productivity in Asia-Pacific countries. The highest body of APO is the Board of Directors, which meets annually, and the secretariat is in Tokyo. All past secretaries-general have been Japanese. A distinctive feature of APO's activities is its collaboration with the Conference of Representatives of Productivity Centers of Each Country (held annually).
