A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Polypodium in the class Anthozoa. It is found throughout Japan, standing on its stalk on the seafloor at depths of 30 to 150 meters. Its overall shape is ivory-white and whip-like, consisting of a shaft and a stalk, the latter of which is slightly spirally wound. It can reach a length of 1 meter, but is only 2 mm wide. Most of the body is taken up by a square bony shaft, on which polyps 4 to 5 mm long grow densely in irregular diagonal rows. However, near the stalk the polyps are poorly developed, and only one vertical row is found on the left and right.

花虫綱ムチウミエラ科の腔腸動物(刺胞動物)。日本各地に分布していて，水深30～150mの海底に柄部で立っている。全形は象牙白色のむち状で軸部と柄部からなり，軸部がわずかにらせん状に巻いている。長さ1mに達するが，幅は2mmにすぎない。体の大部分は四角状の骨軸で占められていて，その上に長さ4～5mmのポリプが不規則な斜横列になって密生する。しかし，柄部近くではポリプの発育が悪くて，左右1縦列のみがみられる。
