むちが空中で振れるように，首が激しく前後に振れるために起こる障害（むち打ち損傷）による一連の症状。自動車の追突事故で起こることが多い。頸(けい)部挫傷(ざしょう)が主体で，頸椎，椎間板，筋肉，神経などが傷害され，多くは頸椎関節の捻挫(ねんざ)。受傷直後から現れる急性症状は，一時的な脳震盪(しんとう)症状，頸部の痛みやしびれ，悪心(おしん)など。10日以上たって現れる慢性症状は頸頭部の痛みやしびれのほか，頭重，耳鳴り，めまい，上肢のしびれ，全身のだるさなど。受傷後直ちに専門医の診断と継続的治療を受けることが必要。
