A general term for whip-like, non-venomous snakes belonging to the Colubridae family. Eight species of the Masticophis (whip snake) are found in North and Central America, while about 34 species of the Coluber (racer) are found in Europe, North Africa, Asia, and North America. They are usually about 1 to 1.8 meters long, with a slender, flexible body and tail. They have a slightly flattened, wide head, a narrow neck, and large eyes. ナミヘビ科に属するむちのように細長い無毒ヘビの総称。アメリカムチヘビ属Masticophis(英名whip snake)8種が北アメリカ,中央アメリカに,ムチヘビ属Coluber(英名racer)約34種がヨーロッパ,北アフリカ,アジアおよび北アメリカに分布する。全長はふつうは1~1.8mほどで,胴も尾も細長くてしなやか。頭部はやや扁平で幅広く頸部(けいぶ)がくびれ,眼が大きい。地上性で行動が敏しょうであり,もっとも速く走るヘビの一つとされる。
