A city in Odessa Oblast in southern Ukraine. Population 85,000 (2001). Located near the apex of the lower Danube delta, ships enter the port 80 km upstream from the northern Black Sea coast. There are factories for food processing, ship repair, paper containers, etc. The founding of the city is unknown, but it was under Genoese influence in the 12th century, and a fortress was built there. It later became part of the Principality of Moldavia, and in the 16th century it became Turkish territory, and after the Russo-Turkish War it became a Russian fortress and the base of the Danube fleet.
