A composite craft in which glass glaze is baked onto metal, a French word equivalent to cloisonné. In English, it is called enamel. It has been practiced since ancient Egypt, such as in the treasures of Tutankhamun, but was refined during the Byzantine Empire and used to make sacred vessels in the 11th and 12th centuries, mainly in Moselle and Limoges. The main techniques are enamel champlevé, in which a sheet of metal is carved and hollowed out, filled with enamel, and baked, and enamel croisonné, in which copper ribbons are attached to the outline of a design, and the gaps are filled with enamel and baked.

金属にガラス釉(ゆう)を焼きつける複合工芸で，七宝に相当する仏語。英語ではエナメル。ツタンカーメンの宝物など古代エジプトから行われているが，ビザンティン帝国時代に洗練され，11―12世紀にモザン地方やリモージュを中心として聖器製作に用いられた。板金を彫りくぼめ，エナメルをつめて焼きつけるエマイユ・シャンルベ，図様の輪郭に銅のリボンをとめ，そのすき間にエナメルをつめて焼きつけるエマイユ・クロアゾンネがおもな技法。
