The name Iberia comes from the fact that the ancient Greeks called the indigenous people of the peninsula Iberes.

Most of the peninsula was formed in the Precambrian, but the Iberian Massif, which forms the base of the peninsula, was formed during the Hercynian orogeny of the late Palaeozoic.
