A family of printers who settled in the northern French city of Lille at the end of the 17th century. André-Joséph (1703-53) was a man who could write himself, and led the family to prosperity. Of his sons, the eldest, Charles-Joseph (1736-98), was known as a major publisher. After training in Paris, he returned to Lille and took over the family business after his father's death. He lived in Paris from 1764, and resonated with the ideals of Enlightenment philosophers, associating with Voltaire, Rousseau, and Buffon, and also translated Lucretius and Tasso.

北フランスのリール市に17世紀末から住みついた印刷業者の家系。アンドレ･ジョゼフAndré‐Joséph(1703‐53)は自らも筆をとるほどの人物で，一家を隆盛に導いた。息子たちの中では長男のシャルル･ジョゼフCharles‐Joséph(1736‐98)が大出版業者として知られる。パリで修業後，リールに帰郷，父の死後家業を継いだ。1764年からパリに住み，啓蒙哲学者たちの理想に共鳴してボルテール，ルソー，ビュフォンらと交わり，またルクレティウスやタッソを翻訳する。
