Museion (English spelling)

Japanese: ムセイオン（英語表記）Museion

The term generally refers to the Royal Institute of Alexandria, originally meaning the Sanctuary of the Muses (goddesses of the arts and sciences) in Greek, but is more famous historically as the great research institute in Alexandria, the capital of the Ptolemaic dynasty. As a center for natural science and philological research, it was the center of the arts and sciences in the Hellenistic world, producing such scholars as Euclid, Archimedes, and Eratosthenes.

本来，ギリシア語で「ミューズ（学芸の女神）」の聖域を意味するが，歴史上有名なものは，プトレマイオス朝の首都アレクサンドリアの大研究機関である。ここは自然科学および文献学研究の中心として，エウクレイデス，アルキメデス，エラトステネスらを輩出し，ヘレニズム世界の学芸の中心だった。
