The name of a theater in Edo. It is said to have been founded in 1642 (Kan'ei 19), but there is no definite proof. Until the mid-Kanbun era (1661-73), it was a small-scale play featuring acrobatics and other acts, but around 1671 it became a large-scale theater, and with Yamamura Chodayu as its owner, it flourished as one of the four Edo theaters along with the Nakamura, Ichimura, and Morita theaters around the Genroku era (1688-1704). In January 1714 (Shotoku 4), it was ordered to close on February 8th after being involved in the Ejima incident, and the 5th head Chodayu was exiled, and the theater was abolished.
