1790‐1865 First king of Belgium. Reigned 1831-65. Fourth son of Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg, a small central German state. Served in the Russian army in the war against Napoleon in 1813, and accompanied Alexander I to Paris. In 1816 he became a naturalized British citizen, and married Charlotte, daughter of the Regent (later George IV) and heir apparent to the throne (she died in childbirth the following year). In 1830 he was nominated to become King of Greece, but declined. After that, he was welcomed as King by the National Assembly of Belgium shortly after independence, but he was required to agree to the terms of the great powers, and awaited the conclusion of the Congress of the Nations in London, where he pledged to uphold the constitution and ascended to the throne the following year.
