Leopold I

1790‐1865
First king of Belgium. Reigned 1831-65. Fourth son of Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg, a small central German state. Served in the Russian army in the war against Napoleon in 1813, and accompanied Alexander I to Paris. In 1816 he became a naturalized British citizen, and married Charlotte, daughter of the Regent (later George IV) and heir apparent to the throne (she died in childbirth the following year). In 1830 he was nominated to become King of Greece, but declined. After that, he was welcomed as King by the National Assembly of Belgium shortly after independence, but he was required to agree to the terms of the great powers, and awaited the conclusion of the Congress of the Nations in London, where he pledged to uphold the constitution and ascended to the throne the following year.

ベルギーの初代国王。在位1831‐65年。中部ドイツの小邦ザクセン･コーブルク公フランツの第4子。1813年ロシア軍に勤務して対ナポレオン戦争に従軍し，アレキサンドル1世に従ってパリに赴く。16年イギリスに帰化し，摂政(後のジョージ4世)の王女(王位継承予定者)シャーロットと結婚(同王女は翌年，出産に際して死去)。30年ギリシア王に推されたがこれを辞退の後，独立直後のベルギーの国民議会から同国王として迎えられたが，彼は諸列強の承諾を条件とし，ロンドン列国会議の妥結をまって，翌年憲法遵守を誓約し即位した。
