Japanese: ピウラ(英語表記)Piura
Piura (English spelling)
The capital of Piura Department in northwestern Peru. It is located in the desert on the Pacific coast, about 350 km north-northwest of Trujillo, in an oasis along the Piura River. Since the first town was founded in 1532 by F. Pizarro, the conqueror of the Inca Empire, it has been relocated several times and settled in its current location in 1988. It is the commercial and industrial center of northwestern Peru, distributing cotton, rice, sugar cane, etc., and there are cotton spinning factories, cottonseed oil factories, etc. in and around the city. In the city center with many parks and gardens, old buildings such as the Basilica of St. Francis and the Basilica of Las Mercedes are preserved among modern buildings, and it retains the atmosphere of the colonial era. It is the location of the University of Piura (1968). In addition to the Pan-American Highway, there is a road that leads to the outer port of Paita, about 50 km west. Population 315,800 (1990 estimate).
