School excursion (English spelling)

...There are cases where a trip lasting less than half a day with limited learning objectives such as sightseeing or observation is called "field trip," while a trip with overnight stays is called "school trip." In the 19th century in Europe and America, it was combined with field trips under the influence of Herbartian teaching theory, and in the 20th century, under the new educational philosophy, contact with nature was emphasized, and it was called "school excursion" in the UK and the US, and "Schulausflug" in Germany. In Japan, it originated as a trip to and from the venue for elementary school sports day held jointly by various schools, and became established as a school event for each school from the late Meiji period.
