It is an acid anhydride and has a structure in which one molecule of water has been removed from the two carboxyl groups of phthalic acid. It is obtained by heating and dehydrating phthalic acid, but industrially it is produced by oxidizing naphthalene or o -xylene in the gas phase using vanadium pentoxide as a catalyst. It is a colorless needle-like crystal that is sublimable. It is slightly soluble in water and gradually hydrolyzes to phthalic acid. It is also slightly soluble in ether. It is used in the manufacture of phthalic acid esters such as dioctyl phthalate, a plasticizer for plastics, as well as in the synthesis of alkyd resins, dyes such as phenolphthalein, fluorescein, and eosin, and medicines.
