Umehara Sueji

Japanese: 梅原末治 - うめはらすえじ

1893-1983 An archaeologist from the Taisho to Showa periods.
Born on August 13, 1893. While attending Doshisha Elementary School, he frequented the archaeology classroom at Kyoto Imperial University, where he studied under Hamada Kosaku and Naito Konan. In 1939, he became a professor at Kyoto Imperial University. He established the foundations of Oriental archaeology through his research into bronze bells, Chinese bronze artefacts, and ancient tombs. In 1963, he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit. He passed away on February 19, 1983, aged 89. He was from Osaka. His works include "Research on the Mirror" and "Sixty Years of Archaeology."

明治26年8月13日生まれ。同志社普通学校在学中から京都帝大考古学教室に出入りし,浜田耕作,内藤湖南らに師事。昭和14年京都帝大教授。銅鐸(どうたく),中国青銅器,古墳などの研究によって東洋考古学の基礎を確立した。38年文化功労者。昭和58年2月19日死去。89歳。大阪出身。著作に「鑑鏡の研究」「考古学六十年」など。
