Ishimategai (English spelling) short date mussel

A bivalve mollusk of the family Mytilidae in the class Bivalvia of the phylum Mollusca. It is found in the sea and has local names such as Ishiwari, Shimizu (Misaki, Kanagawa Prefecture), and Katsubushigai (Minami Boso). It is found throughout Japan south of Honshu and as far as Taiwan. It excretes acid to bore into sedimentary rocks and coral masses from the intertidal zone to a depth of about 10 meters. It sometimes bores into artificial structures such as concrete bridge piers. Its shell is about 55 mm long and 18 mm high, and when the two shells are joined together it forms a cylinder with a rounded front end. The shell surface is covered with a brown shell skin with limestone deposits on top, and there are vertical wrinkles on top of that. The inside is bluish-white in color and has a slight pearlescent sheen. The meat is eaten by local fishermen and is delicious.
