Marko

...The legend of Prince Marko, the hero of a series of oral epics sung to the accompaniment of the folk instrument gusla among the South Slavs. The model is based on the real Prince Marko (c. 1335-95), the eldest son of King Vukasin, who proclaimed himself monarch with Prilep in Macedonia as his capital during the final period of the medieval Serbian Kingdom. Marko's image as the hero of the epics is linked to the supernatural abilities of the heroes of myths and folk tales from the pagan era, and the patriotism of the bandits and righteous thieves (so-called hajduks) who played an active role in the armed resistance movement during the Ottoman Turkish rule, making him the most popular hero in oral literature as a hero who symbolizes the people's fervent desire for national independence.
