A French Symbolist poet hailed as the "poet of autumn and twilight." Born in Lille, he moved to Paris and helped found the magazine Mercure de France. His representative works include his first collection of poems, In the Princess' Garden (1893), which was in the Symbolist style, and his second collection of poems, On the Skin of a Vase ( Au flanc du vase ) (1898), which was in the highbrow style. His other posthumous collections of poems include The Golden Coach (1901), Collection of Comedies (1902), and the two-act verse drama Polyphemus (performed in 1904).
