The name of a type of beryl that is sea-blue and transparent. Compared to emeralds, it is undamaged and has fewer inclusions, and is produced in large crystals, making it less rare. It is mainly produced as hexagonal columnar crystals in granitic pegmatites. Its main production areas are Brazil, the Ural region of Russia, Namibia, and Madagascar, with only small amounts produced in Japan in the Naegi region of Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, Yamanoo in Sakuragawa City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Tanoueyama in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Green or yellow beryl can be turned into aquamarine by heat treatment. The name is derived from the Latin word for seawater, due to its distinctive color. It is the birthstone for March.
