Charadriiformes, Scolopacidae. Total length 15-18cm. In summer plumage (→ plumage), the head is white with black median and lateral lines, and a reddish-brown stripe above the eyes. The throat, chest, and flanks are white with black spots. The back and coverts have a black center and white or chestnut edges, giving them a scaly pattern. The belly is white. The beak is black with a slightly downward-curving tip. The legs are also black. The tail is gray-brown, and the rump is gray-brown in the middle and white at the flanks. In winter plumage, the back is gray to gray-brown, the ventral surface is white, but the neck and chest have pale gray-brown stripes. It breeds in the Scandinavian Peninsula, the Ob and Yenisei river basins in the central Russian Arctic, and the Kolyma River basin in the east. After breeding, they spend the winter in the central part of East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, southeastern India, Bangladesh, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the coastal areas of Australia. They come to Japan during the spring and autumn migration and can be seen on tidal flats and riverbanks, but their numbers are not so large. (→ Wading birds)
