This refers to protecting the contents of a certain part of a computer's memory by making it programmatically write-protected. Special hardware is used to perform memory protection, and in many cases, if the address of an instruction points to a memory protection address, the instruction is rejected. Memory protection is applied to the resident parts of an operating system, parts of other programs when multiple programs are being processed simultaneously, and important data parts of auxiliary memory devices.

コンピュータの記憶装置のある部分をプログラム的に書き換え禁止にして，その内容を保護することをいう。記憶保護を行うために特殊なハードウェアをもち，命令のアドレスが記憶保護番地をさすと，その命令を拒否するようになっている場合が多い。オペレーティングシステムの常駐部分，多数のプログラムが同時並行処理されているときの他のプログラムの部分，補助記憶装置の重要なデータの部分などに記憶保護をかける。
