Located about 10 km southeast of Poza Rica in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, on the Gulf Coast of Mexico, this is a representative ruin of the Veracruz Classic Culture (4th to 9th centuries AD). At first it was strongly influenced by Teotihuacan, but in its decline it displayed its own individuality and exerted an influence. It consists of numerous pyramids (temples) and ball courts, but only a small part of them has been excavated so far. The six-story pyramid with 365 small square niches is famous, but the other buildings are also distinctive in that they are decorated with niches, lightning bolts, and protruding eaves. A dozen ball courts have been discovered, suggesting that ball games were popular in the area. The walls of the ball courts feature bas-reliefs of ball players being sacrificed and intricate arabesque patterns unique to the Veracruz Classic Culture. In addition, this site was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1992 (World Cultural Heritage Site).
