Japanese: 臼杵[市] - うすき

A city in eastern Oita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. Facing Usuki Bay and accessed by the Nippō Main Line and the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway, the city was the castle site of Otomo Sorin and the castle town of the Inaba clan during the Edo period. Miso and soy sauce brewing has been carried out here since the Edo period, and whiskey brewing and shipbuilding have also been carried out here. There is also a tobacco factory. Kabosu, tomatoes, and sweet summer mandarins are also produced in abundance here. There are the Usuki Cliff-Carved Buddhas (a special historic site) and the Nogami Yaeko Literary Memorial Museum. A ferry boat runs between the city and Yawatahama City in Ehime Prefecture. In January 2005, Nozu Town in Ono District was incorporated. 291.20 ^km2 . Population: 41,469 (2010).

大分県東部の市。1950年市制。臼杵湾に臨み日豊本線や東九州自動車道が通じる市街は大友宗麟の居城地で，江戸時代は稲葉氏の城下町であった。江戸時代からのみそ・醤油醸造をはじめ，ウィスキー醸造，造船が行われ，タバコ工場もある。カボス，トマト，甘夏ミカンも多産。臼杵磨崖仏（特別史跡），野上弥生子文学記念館がある。愛媛県八幡浜市間にフェリーボートが就航。2005年１月大野郡野津町を編入。291.20km²。４万1469人（2010）。
